Installing Barn Owl Boxes On Your Farm, Nursery or Other Agricultural Property and the use of barn owls to help control rodent populations is well documented and recommended by most rodent control professionals for all agricultural programs. The introduction of barn owls on your agricultural property is most effective when used in conjunction with a number of other methods of integrated pest management ( IPM) . Each problem rodent species presents their own set of problems, however the addition of Barn Owl Boxes is very effective when used in conjunction with other IPM methods . These IPM methods include choosing cover crops that are less likely to feed and harbor rodents, springtime trapping of adult rodents, especially females, and the creation of mown, or low growing buffer zones around the fields to reduce immigration of rodents. Owls are "cavity nesters" and do not build their own nests and they simply use the old nests of hawks, ravens and other birds. There are many types of owl boxes available but we feel our own design is most beneficial because our hole size is big enough for the barn owl ; yet too small for Great Horned Owls to enter and prey on Barn Owls or their chicks. If you live in Iowa and have an interest in adding Barn Owl Boxes on your own property we would be happy to explain in detail our boxes and our installation. Our customers have had much success in the control of moles, gophers, rats, mice, voles and other rodents on their own properties and experience better control of rodents after the introduction of Barn Owl boxes on their agricultural properties.
